Michael Chuah

Originally from Malaysia.
Michael Chuah grew up in a family surrounded by creativity—his parents ran a creative design studio. On weekends, the family’s favorite activity was visiting comic book stores, each picking out their favorite titles to read. From primary school, his father encouraged him to submit comics to newspapers, while his mother taught him how to use a Macintosh computer. These experiences marked the beginning of his creative journey and ignited his passion for visual art.
After graduating from a graphic design program, Michael joined a comic company in 2001. He went on to create popular titles such as In & Out: Black & White Ping Pong, Office Survival, and Ah Beng Comics. He also designed covers for novels, magazines, and music albums.
Over time, he continued to expand his creative pursuits, releasing limited-edition artist toys, NFTs (non-fungible tokens), and children’s picture books. His work is known for its diversity and cross-disciplinary style.
In his 20th-anniversary art book A Sides: Michael Chuah Design, he wrote in the foreword:
"I have a passionate love for creating. From the moment I open my eyes to the second my head hits the pillow, I spend my entire day drawing, designing, and creating."
After over two decades of focused work, the COVID-19 pandemic and its accompanying movement restrictions forced Michael to pause—and in doing so, he decided to take on a new personal challenge.
"I was always rushing deadlines, doing design work, and never had to really interact with people. Then I read a book that said: whether a project succeeds often depends on whether you can form a connection with someone—and that requires communication."
Stuck at home during lockdown, he bought a camera and started filming YouTube videos to push himself to practice speaking.
"Speaking has never been my strength. English isn’t my first language, and I wasn’t used to facing a camera. Just to get the first line of the intro—‘Hey yo, what’s up, this is Michael Chuah’—I had to practice it 150 times." he admitted.
In 2021, as the concept of Web3.0 surged in popularity, blockchain, cryptocurrency, and NFTs became hot topics online. Michael also ventured into NFT creation, exploring the artistic potential at the intersection of the virtual and real worlds. Ultimately, however, it was physical art that continued to hold his heart.
"What I love most about making physical art is seeing people in real life. Sometimes, kids who once loved my work come back as grown-ups to tell me their stories—and that feels incredibly special and touching."

光是影片開頭那句 'Hey yo, what’s up, this is Michael Chuah',我練了150次。」
